January 13, 2019 — J. Paul Getty Museum Tour & Getty Research Institute Tour: Kathleen Salomon, Chief Librarian of the Getty Research Institute, led us in a behind-the scenes tour of the library, including special collections from the vault, before we viewed the fabulous exhibit “Art of Three Faiths: a Torah, a Bible, and a Qur’an”, featuring the newly acquired illuminated 13th century Rothchild Pentateuch.

October 29, 2017 — Speaker: DAVID HIRSCH: TRAVELING LIBRARIAN – Searching the World for Rare Judaic Manuscripts. UCLA Librarian for Jewish and Middle Eastern Studies, David will share his travels and reveal stories and photos of his most recent sojourns in Iraq, Kurdistan, and Pakistan, searching for manuscripts for the university’s extensive collections. He will also share future plans for expanding the UCLA library collections. FYI – David speaks or reads 12 languages.

May 21, 2017 — AJLSC visited Loyola Marymount University campus and enjoyed a special tour of the William H. Hannon Library from librarian Rhonda Rosen. Rhonda also shared some of the fascinating photos of Jewish life from the Werner von Boltenstern Shanghai Photograph and Negative Collection owned by the University and how they are used in the Jewish Studies classes there.

Lisa Silverman (Library Director, Sperber Jewish Community Library) facilitated the discussion about the most recent 2016 Jewish adult and children’s titles. All were encouraged to bring 2-3 new books to share. As a Jewish Journal reviewer, Lisa also shared “inside knowledge” about upcoming 2017 Jewish-themed books of interest. We celebrated Hanukkah with a themed-lunch.

February 4, 2013 — David Hirsch, UCLA Librarian for Jewish and Middle Eastern Studies, spoke on “Reading Isaac Bashevis Singer in Abu Dhabi.” David narrated a slide show, showing where he had worked and traveled throughout the Middle East these past few years. December 10, 2012 — Hanukkah and retirement dinner party in honor of AJLSC 40-year member, Adaire Klein. Adaire is retiring as Director of Library and Archival Services at the Simon Wiesenthal Center – Museum of Tolerance. In May 2013, she will be moving to Israel. Adaire was our AJLSC President 1975-1979, and has served as an AJLSC Director as well as many other positions since then. September 19, 2011 – Indoctrination and Imagination in Early Israeli Children’s Literature: The Case of HaSaMBaH. Presented by Dr. Yaffa Weisman, Director of The Frances-Henry Library, Adjunct Associate Professor Modern Jewish Studies, Hebrew Union College-JIR, Los Angeles. One of the most popular and most influential children’s adventure books in Israel in the 50s and 60s was HaSaMBaH (an acronym for Havurat Sod Muhlat Be-HeHlet = The Gang of the Ultimate Secret), authored by Igal Mosehnzon. A group of teenage boys and girls set out to secretly assist adults intent on ousting the British and setting up the modern State of Israel. October 4, 2010 — Following a brief AJLSC meeting, the program was presented: “A Culinary History of Jews in America” based on the “Astrological Signs of the Delicatessen,” an interesting 45-minute multimedia presentation by Seth Front of The Jewish Zodiac. Culinary books and cookbooks were passed around. Two bibliographies were distributed: Seth Front’s “Jewish Food Books,” and Lisa Silverman’s list of 72 books — (search terms “Cookery” and “1998-2010”) — found in the Sinai Temple Blumenthal Library. The program was held in the Library of Yeshiva University of Los Angeles Girls School, Los Angeles 90035. Host: Sarah Sagal.

December 14, 2009 — Peter Manseau, author of Songs for the Butcher’s Daughter – a novel based on some of the author’s experiences at the Yiddish Book Center, Amherst, MA. The author, a “lapsed Catholic” has won awards for this novel about the Yiddish language and culture: 2008 National Jewish Book Award, 2009 Sophie Brody Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Jewish Literature by the American Library Association, 2009 Harold U. Ribalow Prize of Hadassah Magazine. He also wrote two non-fiction books: A memoir, Vows: The Story of a Priest, a Nun, and Their Son; and most recently Rag and Bone: A Journey Among the World’s Holy Dead. March 1, 2004 — A Haggadot Extravaganza! Barbara Y. Leff and AJLSC members shared special Haggadot. Barbara’s slide show, The Passover Haggadah, highlighted some of the Haggadot she collected at Stephen S. Wise Temple while Library Director (1969-1996). Roberta Lloyd, SSWT Library Director and host, introduced the special Haggadot cabinet to honor Barbara’s retirement; it was donated by SSWT, AJLSC, and Barbara’s family and friends. January 12, 2004 — Mark L. Smith –“Are Sholem Aleichem’s Stories for Jewish Children Really Children’s Stories?” This Yiddish book and literature expert focused on the Mayses far Yidishe Kinder by Sholem Aleichem — among the best-known Yiddish works for children; many have become popular in English as well.
